Company Profile: Claudia graduated from Fashion institute of Design and Merchandising in downtown Los Angeles in 1977. She landed her first job as an assistant for an accessory firm, moved quickly up to a disco dress house and finally landed her first design position for a budget dress house. No job was too small or large for Ms. Grau. After trying to style sponge polyester into knock-off Armanis, her budget company boss informed Ms Grau that she was untalented and should go back to school. Thus Grau design was born.
Description: Claudia, young and naïve, dreamed of having a store. It was February 1979. She almost opened up her boutique on Yucca Ave., but a friend persuaded her to look down on a new emerging street a couple of miles away: less than two hours later Claudia had signed a lease for her first location on the now famous Melrose Ave. She was 21 years old with no real business sense; her first sale made, she realized she had to run out and get a petty cash box and receipt book. Most of her career continued on a need to know basis.
